Southbank Printmakers
Original fine art print gallery
The big move has happened! Thanks to a massive team effort, we have moved the contents of Southbank Printmakers Gallery from Gabriel's Wharf to our new home at 73 Wells Street, London W1T 3QG and we are open for business!
It's a lovely light space on a great little street, with the Champion pub just on the corner. We are part of Fitzrovia Quarter, a buzzing and growing neighbourhood of creatives and interesting businesses, so we're quite at home.
73 Wells Street is easily accessible by bus or tube

The move from Gabriel's Wharf was quite a challenge - luckily printmakers are a practical bunch!
What's on this month
We rehang the walls of the gallery every few months and there is a fresh collection of framed work to accompany the launch of the Fitzrovia gallery.
One of the two hanging teams.
We have more wall space at the new gallery.
Artist in Focus
When you visit Southbank Printmakers you will see one of our members picked out as the Artist in Focus, with extra wall and browser space given to their work.
JANE STOTHERT: 11th May - 7th June
Jane started life as a graphic designer. Her screenprints are carefully planned using photographs and drawings, which she simplifies using Procreate on her iPad. She then makes a collage to check colour and composition. The shapes created in the collage are traced and used for the different layers of colour in the print, which can require up to 20 separate applications of ink.
To create her screenprints, Jane traces the whole image, then selects the lightest colour and cuts out the required shapes from a light-fast film. A nylon mesh screen is coated with photo emulsion, then the shapes, with screen on top, are placed onto a UV exposure unit. The areas blocked by the film stay soft and the rest of the emulsion is hardened by the UV light. When the screen is sprayed with water the images are revealed as open areas of mesh, ready to have ink printed through them. This is repeated for every colour.
For this Artist in Focus Jane is showing a selection of her London images, some hard-edged and others more representational. She is including one screenprint from her Anglesey series, which was accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2020.
Meet the Artist: Jane will be at the gallery to chat about her work on 18th May.

We were all sad to hear that Maureen Sweeney, one of our longest serving members, had passed away at the beginning of May.
Maureen started off as a librarian but in the 1970s went to Wimbledon Art College before going on to teach History of Art at Holland Park School. She started screenprinting and etching at Putney School of Art in the 1990s and was still etching there until just a few months ago. She instigated a collaborative print show with the Palatinate Printmakers in Germany with brass bands and choirs, lovely meals and being put up in comfy beds. It was such fun and we all sold work too!
She was an immensely determined person right up to the end, but never lost her commitment to art, or her sense of humour. She loved being part of Southbank Printmakers and was looking forward to being part of the new gallery in Wells Street. What sums up Maureen was that she was a 'tour de force’.
We will all miss her greatly.
