Southbank Printmakers
Original fine art print gallery
September was a busy month at Southbank Printmakers, with our first experience of London's amazing Open House Festival and a new hang in the gallery showcasing all our artists' work.
October is looking equally lively! We have an evening Drink & Drypoint workshop, we're welcoming four new members to our collective and we are showcasing two Artists in Focus, Lucy Cooper and Charlotte Staunton.
Open House Festival
We were delighted to be invited to take part in the Open House Festival this September. During its 10-day run, over 500 people came into the gallery to try their hand at a variety of printmaking techniques. Thanks go to all our artists who ran the workshops and demos and to John Purcell Paper and Jackson's the art shop for donating materials.
New hang in the gallery
The display of framed work at the Wells Street Gallery changes every three months or so and here's a selection of the new pieces on show. You can find plenty of unframed original prints to choose from in the browsers too.
Drink & Drypoint
Maureen Nathan's second evening workshop is already a sell out! Keep your eye out in future newsletters for more opportunities to learn from our expert printmakers.
New Members
We are welcoming four new members to our collective. Find out more about them at our website and meet them in the gallery when they take their turn to sit.
Fiona Wallin - screenprint, collagraph and linocut
When you visit Southbank Printmakers you will see one of our members picked out as the Artist in Focus, with extra wall and browser space given to their work.
LUCY COOPER: 28th September - 11th October
Lucy Cooper specialises in limited edition fine art screenprints. Her prints are colourful and uplifting, exploring appealing yet sometimes unexpected combinations of colour and form to reinterpret familiar sights.
The screenprint process both informs and develops Lucy’s work, encouraging her to strip back and simplify the subject and to focus on the interplay of colour, shape and negative spaces. She is particularly drawn to the light and feel of sunny locations and to organic shapes found in nature. She presents scenes which evoke memories of much-loved places or objects, inviting viewers to be transported to the calm and warmth of sunny places or to be reminded of the beauty of familiar settings.
You can meet Lucy at the gallery on 8th October, 11.30am-5.30pm, and read more about Lucy's practice on the Southbank Printmakers' blog.
Staunton, an artist based in Barnet, London, employs a range of linocut techniques to create limited-edition prints. Staunton explores the printing process intuitively to develop a realm of serenity in her work from both real and envisioned landscapes. These explore nature’s tranquillity, complexity, and rich colours, and seek to cultivate a sense of mindfulness and contemplation. Many of Charlotte's prints are linocut reductions, built one layer at a time from a single block that’s surface becomes smaller with each layer. Every layer is inked by hand with a blend of wiping, stippling and a palette knife, coaxing out textures and unique marks. Staunton works intuitively with colour and form, letting each cut and each shade whisper what should come next.

What is linocut? A linocut is a type of relief print, a playful medium that allows the artist to experiment with numerous inking and cutting techniques. A relief print is where the ink is held on the raised surface of the plate or block. Linocut printmakers cut away parts of the block to make an image that will print when the surface of the block is inked and pressed on paper. The artist removes areas of the block that they don't want to print. Our Artist in Focus Charlotte Staunton mainly works with reduction linocut, made by cutting away a little more of the lino plate after each layer of colour is printed, until almost nothing is left of the block. With every layer, the image slowly emerges.
